Markup is how much you add on top of your cost to reach a selling price: markup = (price - cost) / cost x 100. It is the everyday tool for pricing products and jobs, and it is not the same thing as margin, which measures the same profit against the selling price instead of the cost. Mixing the two up is one of the most common and expensive pricing mistakes: a 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin.
